Black, Grote win golds as U.S. gets seven women’s medals at Junior Pan Ams in Canada

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario, Canada - The United States won seven medals, including two golds, at the Junior Pan American Women’s Championships on Saturday.

Individual champions for the United States were Megan Black of Batavia, Iowa at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Skylar Grote of Newton, N.J. at 67 kg/147.5 lbs.

Black, who attends King University, went 2-0 beatingAmber Lynn Maschke of Canada, 12-0 and Martha Vanessa Olivares of Peru, 8-8.

Grote, who attends at Blair Academy in New Jersey, won all three of her bouts, stopping Lorena Claire Ellis of Canada, 9-7, Leonela Aleyda Ayovi of Ecuador, 8-2 and Nora Flores of Peru, 4-2.

Winning silver medals for Team USA were Regina Doi of Kingsburg, Calif. at 44 kg/97 lbs., Amy Hou of Rome, Ga. at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. , Sierra Blasone of Sussex, N.J. at 51 kg/112.25 lbs. and Gabrielle Weyhrich of Fremont, Neb. at 59 kg/130 lbs.

Doi, a graduated high school senior, will attend King University. Hou is a U.S. Olympic Training Center resident who attends UCCS. Blasone attends Sparta High School in New Jersey. Weyhrich wrestles for McKendree University.

Winning a bronze medal was Jamestown University’s Mary Westman of Cattaraugus, N.Y. at 72 kg/158.5 lbs.

Coaching the USA team were Seiko Nagashima of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Lauren Lamb of Farmington, N.Y.

“The girls wrestled tough with a lot of passion and heart. We are proud of their performance,” said Lamb
