DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – When Kamal Bey steps on the wrestling mat, you can expect plenty of action.

And a heck of a show.

The explosive and flashy Bey capped a phenomenal week with a technical fall win to propel Team Illinois past Pennsylvania Red 49-27 in the Cadet National Duals freestyle finals.

Bey capped an unbeaten week in Greco-Roman and freestyle by scoring an 11-0 first-period win over Jared Seigrist of Pennsylvania Red on Saturday afternoon at the Ocean Center Exhibit Hall.

“Being on Team Illinois is just the best experience,” said Bey, who competes at 170 pounds. “We’re not just a team, we’re like a family. All of us are friends and we’ve always been friends. That’s real cool. It helps a lot. We’re not just wrestling for ourselves and for our own glory, but for the glory of Illinois. It’s been a lot of fun.”

Bey’s performance was among many superb showings by the deep and talented Illinois squad.

“Kamal’s an exciting young man to watch,” Illinois coach Kerry Boumans said. “He has a lot of talent, a lot of ability and a lot of potential. I look forward to him harnessing his skills and taking them to the next level if he chooses to because he probably can.”

Illinois won its second Cadet National Duals title in three days after winning its fourth straight Cadet Greco-Roman team title on Thursday.

Illinois repeated as Cadet National Duals champion in freestyle and won its fourth title in that style in the past six years.

“The kids really came together,” Boumans said. “They had a great performance in Greco obviously, and to get them back up for freestyle wasn’t even a task. They were ready for it, and they wanted to repeat and double up again. They had a great performance.”

Ohio Red downed Oklahoma Red 42-30 in the third-place match.

New Jersey edged Michigan Blue 42-36 in the fifth-place dual.

Indiana defeated Utah 48-28 in the seventh-place dual.

Cadet wrestlers are born in 1998 and 1999.
