PECS, Hungary – Patrick Smith (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) won a silver medal at 71 kg/156.5 lbs. and Sam Jones (Folsom, La./USOEC) added a bronze at 59 kg/130 lbs. in Greco-Roman at the University World Championships on Friday.
Smith, who competes for the Univ. of Minnesota, was defeated by technical fall in the finals by 2012 Olympic silver medalist and three-time European champion Tamas Lorincz of Hungary.
Smith opened with an 8-0 win over Austria’s Stefan Fuchstreiter, then stopped Naoya Nakamura of Japan, 9-7 in the semifinals.
Smith was second at the 2014 U.S. Senior Open this year, and has been a rising star within the age-group ranks.
Jones pinned Andrey Borisov of Bulgaria in the bronze-medal round to earn his medal.
He dropped his opening bout to Akan Baimagambetov of Kazakhstan, and when Baimagambetov reached the finals, Jones was drawn back into repechage.
The other American in competition today, Orry Elor (Marquette, Mich./New York AC/USOEC) at 98 kg/216 lbs., lost his opening bout to 2010 Junior World silver medalist Alin Alexuc-Ciurariu of Romania and was eliminated from repechage when Alexuc-Ciurariu failed to make finals.
“The guys competed very well today. They showed up battled and won the hand fight. They brought a pace and energy that allowed them to succeed in today's competition. Bringing home two medals out of three wrestlers is great for the United States of America and Greco Roman wrestling in the USA. Today our athletes showed they belong with the world’s best. It was impressive to watch how hard they wrestled and was a testament to the great camp coach Rodney Smith ran. He had the guys ready to compete. Our wrestlers have bought into everything we are telling them and are a blast to work with. Today's wrestlers set the tone for our athletes competing tomorrow and we look forward to bringing more medals home,” said U.S. Coach Tommy Owen.
Pairings for the final three U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers to compete on Saturday are below.
