GUELPH, Canada - Two top U.S. wrestlers won gold medals at the Guelph Open on Saturday, men’s freestyler Dan Mitcheff (Lakewood, Ohio/Northeast Ohio RTC) at 57 kg/125.5 lbs. and women’s freestyler Carlene Sluberski (Fredonia, N.Y./Brock WC) at 53 kg/116.75 lbs.

Mitcheff defeated Canada’s Scott Schiller in the finals by technical fall, 12-1.

The former Kent State All-Amercan went 4-0 in the tournament, winning all four bouts by technical fall. His tech falls prior to the finals were all against Canadians, beating Jack Needham 12-2, Aso Palani 11-0 and Gaston Tardif 11-0. He outscored his opponents 46-3. Mitcheff is an assistant coach at Cleveland State.

Sluberski, who attends college in Canada at Brock University, scored a pin over her Brock teammate from Canada, Diana Weicker, in the finals.

Sluberski finished 4-0 in the tournament. Her closest match was a 6-4 win in round two over Brianne Barry of Canada. She also scored a first-round pin and a semifinal technical fall, also over Canadian opponents.

Winning a bronze medal at 86 kg/189.25 lbs. was Enock Francois (New Windsor, N.Y./New York AC), with an impressive 5-1 record for the day. He scored a 12-1 technical fall in the bronze-medal bout over Nick Proctor of Canada.

Francois lost a close 5-6 match in the second round to eventual champion Jordan Steen of Canada, then rebounded to win four straight matches in the wrestlebacks. Francois was a three-time NAIA All-American and a national runner-up competing for Northwestern College and Cal Baptist, and currently coaches at Army.
