MINSK, Belarus – The Belarus national team defeated a team from the United States, 8-2 in an exhibition dual meet in freestyle wrestling on Friday.

Claiming victories for the USA were a pair of past NCAA champions, Matt McDonough (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) at 61 kg/134 lbs. and Jon Reader (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 86 kg/189 lbs.

McDonough, who won two NCAA crowns for Iowa, defeated Georgy Kaliev, 9-8.

Reader, a past NCAA champion for Iowa State, stopped Omar Magomedov, 12-10.

“On a bright note, Matt McDonough and Jon Reader both overcame 4-0 deficits to win. Reader redeemed his 2013 Medved International loss to the Belarus wrestler,” said U.S. coach Brandon Slay.

The Belarus team featured many of their top competitors who represent their nation at the World Championships and other major events.

“We will hopefully learn that adversity is the best education! To be the best in the world, you can't give up big moves and get turned multiple times. We will learn from this adversity, improve, and redeem thes losses down the road. Team USA will be back on the mats tomorrow to begin working on these important Areas of Concentration,” said Slay.

The U.S. wrestlers on this tour are scheduled to compete in the Alexander Medved International in Minsk, March 1-2.
