PARIS, France - Nick Marable (Columbia, Mo./Sunkist Kids/Missouri Wrestling Foundation) won a gold medal at 74 kg/163 lbs. in men’s freestyle, one of four U.S. medalists on the final day of the Grand Prix of Paris on Sunday.

The former Univ. of Missouri star went a perfect 4-0 on the day. He opened with victories over opponents from Belgium, Poland and Georgia to reach the finals, where he defeated 2010 Asian bronze medalist Urunbat Purevjav of Mongolia, 6-2.

“Nick Marable represented the continued progress of our regional training sites, the Missouri Wrestling Foundation and the Sunkist Kids National Team under the leadership of Art and Kim Martori. He worked through his areas of concentration and staying to the game plan throughout the tournament! Consistency wins,” said U.S. coach Sammie Henson.

All three U.S. men’s freestyle athletes competing on Sunday won medals. At 86 kg/189 lbs., Keith Gavin (Columbus, Ohio/Titan Mercury WC/Ohio RTC) claimed a silver medal and Phil Keddy (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) won a bronze medal.

Gavin, an NCAA champion for Pittsburgh and 2013 U.S. World Team member, opened with wins over opponents from Spain and Poland, then beat Akhmed Aibuev of France in the semifinals, 4-2. In the gold-medal match, Gavin lost to Taimuraz Friev of Spain, 3-5. Friev was fifth in the 2013 World Championships.

Keddy, a past Iowa star, won his first two bouts against wrestlers from France and Mongolia, then was defeated by Friev in the semifinals. Keddy rebounded to beat Armanas Zvirbulis of Latvia in his bronze-medal bout, 6-2. Zvirbulis was 10th in the 2012 Olympic Games.

In the women’s freestyle tournament, Kennon Henderson (Colorado Springs, Colo./OTC) won a bronze medal at 60 kg/132 lbs.

In the two-day event, the United States won an impressive 14 medals in men’s and women’s freestyle, with Marable as the lone U.S. champion. All 19 Americans entered placed in the top seven of their weights.

“It was great work by the men's freestyle team this weekend, with a lot of good things. We got nine medals out 11 athletes. Of course you always want more gold, but experience is part of the process,” said Henson. “We need to build on little things! Champions adapt in matches, not after. This should be our focus going forward! I appreciate the experience of being around such great wrestlers and men! We look forward to continued success for Zeke Jones and Team USA!”
