ASTANA, Kazakhstan (April27) – The Kazakhstani Greco-Roman team crowned one champion Sunday en route to winning its first Asian Championship team title since 2004.

The Kazakhstani side was lead by Yerulan ISKAKOV (KAZ) who needed just 28 seconds in Sunday’s final to take the 8-0 technical fall over Akira OSAKA (JPN). The 98kg wrestler found a quick lift and set of turns to make his way past his Japanese opponent.

The home team had two champions in Greco-Roman competition and added one silver and two bronze medal performances to help push them past second place Kyrgyzstan by six points, 63-57.

London Olympic champion Hyeonwoo KIM (KOR) won his third Asian Championship on Sunday taking the 75kg title over Takehiro KANAKUBO (JPN), 8-0. The 2013 world champion often risked superior position to find large value moves and treated fans to a spectacular showcase of talent.

Kim wore a black armband and ribbon on the awards stand in honor of the lives lost in the recent Korean ferry disaster.

“It was very hard to prepare for the tournament,” said Kim. “Our team has felt this tragedy very close to our hearts. I hope that our wrestling can bring some small happiness to the Korean people. ”

Kim’s teammate and 2013 world champion Hansu RYU suffered an upset in the quarterfinals losing to Husarav OBLOBERDIEV (TJK), 4-2. Ryu went on to earn bronze.

Kyrgyzstan crowned two champions on the final day of the Asian Championship. Ruslan TSAREV (KGZ) hulked past Husarav OBLOBERDIEV (TJK), 8-2 in the 66kg finals, as teammate Zhanarbek KENZEEV earned the first period fall over Ghaderian YOUSEF of Iran.

The final medal of the Asian Championships was awarded to 130kg wrestler Mehdizadeh Aryatapeh BEHNAM of Iran who beat Murat ROMANOV (KGZ) in the finals via disqualification.
