VANTAA, Finland (April 1) – Russia crowned three champions on the opening day of the European senior wrestling championships, while Mariya STADNYK (AZE) prevented the sweep with her fourth continental title.

Valeria KOBLOVA-ZHOLOBOVA (RUS) and Magomed KURBANALIEV (RUS) won their first European titles and Adbusalam GADISOV (RUS) won his second, this time at 97kg, in the day’s final bout. Gadisov won the 96kg title in 2012.

Azerbaijan also pushed three wrestlers into the finals on the first day of competition, but only Stadnyk was able to bring home the gold as she notched a technical fall over Nataliya PULKOVSKA (UKR) for her fourth European crown.

Stadnyk also overwhelmed Nadezhda FEDEROVA (RUS) with a technical fall in the round of 16, but the junior world bronze medalist rebounded for third place at 48kg in women’s freestyle.

Meanwhile, Irina NETREBA (AZE) fell to Koblova-Zholobova, 5-0, in the women’s 58kg final while 2013 world silver medalist Khetag GAZYUMOV (AZE) could not keep up with Gadisov and dropped at 5-1 decision at 97kg

Also for Azerbaijan, London 2012 Olympic Games gold medalist Toghrul ASGAROV (AZE) was stunned in the opening round by Borislav NOVACHKOV (BUL) and eliminated from the competition early.

Novachkov hit Asgarov with a four-point double-leg takedown midway through the second period of their first round bout at 65kg for a sudden 8-4 lead and then landed on top of a throw attempt to make the final score 13-5.

Asgarov was later denied a chance to wrestle in the consolation bracket when Novachkov fell, 6-3, to Servet COSKUN (TUR) in the semifinals.

Magomed KURBANALIEV (RUS), 2012 junior world champion, getting his first shot at the European championships, scored with five clean leg attacks for a 10-0 technical fall triumph over Servet COSKUN (TUR).
