Nov 09 Five U.S. freestylers win gold medals at New York AC International

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Five athletes from the United States claimed gold medals in freestyle on the final day of the New York Athletic Club International on Saturday.

Claiming the Outstanding Wrestler award was 66 kg/145.5 lbs. champion Frank Molinaro (New Brunswick, N.J. /Scarlet Knight WC), who defeated Alibeggediz Emeev of Russia, 9-4. Molinaro, an NCAA champion for Penn State, is a coach at Rutgers and is starting his Senior freestyle career.

“I was just trying to compete. I visualized that match being a tough one, being a fight. When I am in it, I don’t know what I am thinking, but I am having fun. It was everything I visualized and I am glad I was able to get away with the W,” said Molinaro.

Winning the NYAC International for the second straight year was Wynn Michalak (Champaign, Ill./Titan Mercury WC), who had a strong second period to defeat Deron Winn (Ames, Iowa/Cyclone WC), 9-6.

Two more of Michalak’s teammates from the Titan Mercury WC won titles this evening, Raymond Jordan (Atlanta, Ga./Titan Mercury WC)at 84 kg/185 lbs. and Tyrell Fortune (Portland, Ore./Titan Mercury WC) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.

Jordan, competing in his first event since the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, used an upperbody throw to pin Vladislav Gabareev of Russia in 3:59. Fortune also got his offense going, scoring a 7-0 technical fall over Canada’s
Korey Jarvis.

The other American champion came at 74 kg/163 lbs., when Nick Marable (Columbia, Mo./Sunkist Kids) scored an impressive technical fall over Boris Makoev of Russia, 10-3.

The first two weight classes went to international stars Samat Nadyrbek Uulu of Kyrgyzstan at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Aleksandr Bogomoev of Russia at 60 kg/132 lbs.

The U.S. freestyle national team, along with their Russian guests, will train this week in Lake Placid, N.Y., followed by USA vs. Russia duals in Clifton Park, N.Y. and Ithaca, N.Y. next Saturday and Sunday.
