The Oklahoma Sooners and Oklahoma State Cowboys delivered bedlam Sunday afternoon in Norman, Okla. as the Sooners emerged victorious 16-15 in a dual filled with wild momentum swings.
The dual began in Oklahoma’s favor as Senior All-American for the Sooners Jarrod Patterson delivered a solid 5-0 decision over Oklahoma State’s Eddie Kilmara putting the Sooners ahead early 3-0.
The Cowboys would soon take control of the dual winning five straight matches to take a 15-3 lead in the team score.
At 133 lbs. Jon Morrison won a battle of two top five ranked wrestlers scoring an impressive 8-2 decision over returning Sooner All-American Cody Brewer.
In an unexpected move, Cowboy freshman Anthony Collica was pulled out of redshirt to compete at 141 lbs. against another All-American for the Sooners, Nick Lester. In a back and forth battle Collica proved tough edging Lester 8-7 scoring the clinching takedown with less than 30 seconds remaining in the bout.
Moving to 149 lbs. the Sooners expected to regroup with defending National Champion Kendric Maple stepping on the mat against Cowboy Josh Kindig. Maple led the majority of the match, but gave up a late takedown to drop his second match of the year. Maple went undefeated one year ago.
The Cowboys continued to roll at 157 lbs. and 165 lbs. as a pair of second ranked wrestlers, Alex Dieringer and Tyler Caldwell, handled their opponents to extend the Cowboy lead to 12 with four matches remaining.
The most anticipated bout of the evening lived up to the hype as Andrew Howe defeated Chris Perry 4-2 in the battle of returning national champions. Howe’s victory would prove to be the spark the Sooners needed heading into the final three bouts.
At 184 lbs. Sooner freshman Danny Chaid pulled off a move that will go down in Sooner lore. Trailing 3-2 late in the match to Cowboy freshman Kyle Crutchmer, Chaid hit a foot sweep sending Crutchmer to his back and sealing the victory of the young Sooner 7-3.
All-American and senior leader for the Sooners Travis Rutt picked up a crucial major decision victory over returning Cowboy All-American Blake Rosholt 12-3. The win by Rutt cut the team score to 15-13 in favor of Oklahoma State going into the final bout of the afternoon.
At 285 lbs. Sooner redshirt freshman Ross Larson delivered the biggest win of his young and promising career as he pulled out a 3-2 decision over highly touted Cowboy Austin Marsden completing the Sooner comeback.
The final tally in Norman was 16-15 in favor of the hometown Sooners.
