New York AC Freestyle International underway in New York City

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The annual New York Athletic Club International Championships is underway in New York City on Sunday.

Competition will be in men's freestyle and women's freestyle wrestling.

The men's division has a large and talented field.

All three of the top ranked U.S. wrestlers at 84 kg/185 lbs. are entered: No. 1 Jake Herbert of the New York AC, No. 2 Keith Gavin of the Lehigh Valley AC and No. 3 Raymond Jordan of the Sunkist Kids. Herbert was a 2009 World silver medalist.

At 96 kg/211.5 lbs. the top two ranked Americans are in the field: No. 1 J.D. Bergman of the New York AC and No. 2 Jake Varner of the Nittany Lion WC.

The field at 74 kg/163 lbs. features eight of the top 10 ranked American athletes.

The women's freestyle event features a number of top talents. At 63 kg/138.75 lbs., 2010 World silver medalist Elena Pirozhkova of the Gator WC will face a challenge from two-time World champion Kristie Davis of the Gator WC/OCU, who has dropped to this division for the first time since 2004. This weight class also features 2010 Junior World champion Danielle Lappage of Canada.

Five members of the 2010 U.S. Women's World Team are entered in the tournament.

2008 World champion Clarissa Chun of the Sunkist Kids is competing at 48 kg/105.5 lbs.

Other nations represented here include Russia, Canada, Mongolia, Puerto Rico, South Africa, Uzbekistan, Colombia and Mexico., in cooperation with Lighthouse Wrestling, will provide a live webcast from the gold-medal finals. The exact time of the webcast is not yet determined, but will be in the early evening Eastern time. Gary Abbott of USA Wrestling will make the call, along with special guests.
