INDIANAPOLIS, IN (May 22, 2003) - A total of 21 individuals have been selected by the National Federation of State High School Association (NFHS) Coaches Association as National Coaches of the Year for 2002. Ten coaches of girls sports, 10 coaches of boys sports and one in the "other sport" category comprise this year's award winners. Recipients will be honored at events within their respective state. 2002 Wrestling Coach of the Year Jude Roth has compiled a 251-40-2 record in 16 seasons as a high school wrestling coach. Currently the coach at St. Mary Central Catholic High School in Sandusky, Ohio, Roth's teams have won three state championships, finished second four other times and captured 15 district titles. He has received two Coach of the Year awards and was chosen "Man of the Year" for 2001-02 by Wrestling USA magazine. Following are brief biographical sketches of the other 2002 NFHS Coaches Association award winners: BOYS SPORTS Soccer Donald Gregg began his high school soccer coaching career in 1974 and has compiled an outstanding 304-108-12 record in 29 years. His 2002 Severna Park High School (Severna Park, Maryland) team won the Maryland state championship. Overall, his squads have won two state championships, seven runner-up finishes and 14 conference titles. He was named Maryland soccer coach of the year in 2002. Tennis Bob Wood won an amazing 27 state championships and finished second eight other times in 37 years as boys tennis coach at University Liggett School in Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan. He also coached the girls tennis team to 12 state titles. His teams won 339 dual meets in 37 years and 30 regional championships. Wood, who retired last year, also served as the school's athletic director and basketball coach. Golf Currently the boys golf coach at Ada High School in Ada, Oklahoma, Mark Kedy has coached two state championship teams in his 25 years as a high school golf coach. His squad finished third at last year's state tournament. He has been chosen previously as golf coach of the year by the Oklahoma Coaches Association. Kedy also serves as activities director and assistant athletic director. Football The past five years, John Hoch has led the Lancaster (Wisconsin) High School football team to a remarkable 58-7 record, which includes an undefeated season (14-0) and two Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association state championships. Overall, his 20-year coaching record stands at 145-68. In 2001, Hoch was named coach of the year by the Wisconsin High School Football Coaches Association and the Associated Press. Swimming and Diving Virginia Weber has coached boys swimming at the high school level for 21 years and compiled a 198-61 record. Currently the coach at Moorestown (New Jersey) High School, Weber has led her teams to six state championships and two runner-up finishes. She also has coached lacrosse, soccer and softball, and serves on the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Swimming Committee. Cross Country Jeff Arbogast has had amazing success as girls and boys track coach and girls cross country coach at Bingham High School in South Jordan, Utah. His girls cross country teams have compiled a 155-6 record in league competition in his 22 years, and have claimed three state championships and 16 regional titles. The past five years his teams are 40-0 in league competition. His 1999 girls team won the unofficial national championship. Track and Field A 33-year veteran of high school coaching, Rob Johnson led his Clare (Michigan) High School boys track and field team to the 2000 state championship after finishing runner-up in 1999. Johnson's overall record stands at 277-32-1, and his teams have claimed 18 conference championships and 17 regional titles. He was inducted into the Michigan High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2000. Basketball Dave Garvin's overall boys basketball coaching record stands at 371-231 in 26 years, which includes two state championships, three runner-up finishes, six district titles and eight conference championships. Currently the coach at Philomath (Oregon) High School, Garvin was chosen Oregon coach of the year in 2000 and 2002 and has been president of his state's coaches association. Baseball Currently the baseball coach at Eaton (Colorado) High School, James Danley has compiled an impressive 506-133-1 record in 31 years. His teams have won five state championships, finished second six other times and claimed 24 conference, 12 district and 16 regional titles. He has been selected coach of the year in five different years by various organizations. GIRLS SPORTS Volleyball John Knuth's record as volleyball coach at Marysville (Michigan) High School the past six years has been nothing short of amazing. His teams have won 356 matches and lost only 3, which includes a consecutive match streak of 192 wins. Marysville has won six consecutive state championships, and Knuth's overall record in 19 years at Marysville is 806-65-32, a .920 winning percentage. Swimming and Diving Michael O'Connor has compiled a 41-16 record the past five years as girls swimming and diving coach at Grosse Pointe North High School in Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan. In 16 seasons overall, his record stands at 157-65, and his teams have won 12 conference titles, won one state championship and finished second on one other occasion. He was Michigan state coach of the year in 1999. Cross Country Michael Bauer, track and cross country coach at Regis High School in Stayton, Oregon, has coached track and basketball for 29 years and cross country for 27 years. His girls cross country teams have won nine state championships and 25 district titles. He has been Oregon girls cross country coach of the year five times and boys cross country coach of the year twice. Bauer recently completed a four-year term on the NFHS Track and Field and Cross Country Rules Committee. Track and Field Bryan Westfield's girls track and field teams at Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor, Michigan, have won four of the past five state championships and are undefeated in regular-season competition during that time. In fact, in 24 years, his teams have lost only two regular-season meets and have claimed 13 state championships and 23 conference titles. He has been selected state coach of the year 14 times. Softball Tim Jermain has an overall girls softball coaching record of 144-53 in 11 years, which includes one state championship. Currently the coach at Jefferson High School in Conception Junction, Missouri, Jermain also is the school principal and boys basketball coach. In the past five years, his softball teams have won 95 and lost only 16. Basketball All Samantha Morrow has done the past five years as girls basketball coach at Summit High School in Arlington, Texas, is win five state championships and 175 of 185 games. Morrow's overall coaching record stands at 254-48. She has been selected coach of the year by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and serves on the McDonald's All-America Team Selection Committee. Golf A 25-year veteran of high school coaching, Mary Flande has coached girls golf at Sisters High School in Sisters, Oregon, the past eight years, with three appearances in the state tournament. She also is basketball and volleyball coach and athletic director at Sisters. Previously she coached basketball, track and volleyball for 12 years at Newport and Madras in Oregon. Tennis Anni Bennett Miller has coached girls tennis at the high school level for the past 18 years. Her team at Lakeridge High School in Lake Oswego, Oregon, was 16-0 last year and finished fourth in the state championship. Her Lakeridge teams had won five straight conference championships and claimed the 2000 state title. She has been selected 4A coach of the year three times by the Oregon Athletic Coaches Association.
