Dec 21 World Champion Byers wins gold medal at Hungary Grand Prix

2002 World Champion Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) won the 120 kg/264.5 lbs. gold medal at the Hungary Grand Prix in Nyiregyhaza, Hungary on March 2. Byers defeated Zarewpoor of Iran in the championship match, 3-2. In the semifinals, Byers defeated Mihaly Deak-Bardos of Hungary 3-0. Byers defeated Deak-Bardos in the finals of the 2002 World Championships in October. 2001 U.S. World Team member Marcel Cooper (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) was the only other American to advance out of his pool. Cooper was defeated by Roman Gromov of Russia in a qualification match at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. 3-0. Gromov placed sixth at the 2001 CISM Military World Championships. The 2003 Greco-Roman Winter Tour will conclude with the Acropolis Tournament in Athens, Greece, March 29-30.
