Martin wins gold medal at CISM World Greco Roman Championships as USA places second as a team with
Duaine Martin of the U.S. Marine Corps won a gold medal at 58 kg/127.75 lbs., the top U.S. performance at the CISM World Greco-Roman Championships at Goettge Fieldhouse at Camp Lejuene, North Carolina, October 25-26.
The CISM World Championships are the world wrestling championships for military athletes. The best military wrestlers from across the world, including many international wrestling stars, are competing this week. Martin dominated his gold-medal match against Cerpiz Papgan of Turkey. Martin executed a gut wrench and scored eight consecutive points on Papgan. In the second period, he scored more three points to qualify for a technical fall, but pressed Papgan to his back for a pin at 3:53. "Between rounds coach told me not to let down and stay aggressive. I knew that
if I went out and stayed aggressive I would win," said Martin. Winning a silver medal for the United States was Corey Farkas of the U.S. Air Force at 130 kg/286 lbs. Farkas was second in a four-man weight division. The gold was claimed by Aydin Polatci of Turkey, a former Junior World freestyle champion.
Five U.S. wrestlers won bronze medals: Jeff Cervone of the U.S. Air Force at 54 kg/119 lbs., Glenn Nieradka of the U.S. Army at 63 kg/138.75 lbs., Marcel Cooper of the U.S. Marine Corps at 69 kg/152 lbs., Jake Clark of the U.S. Marine Corps at 76 kg/167.5 lbs. and Dan Hicks of the U.S. Marine Corps at 97 kg/213.75 lbs.
Turkey claimed the team title with 74 points and seven medalists, followed by the United States with 65 points and Germany with 44 points. Nine nations participated in the Greco-Roman division. The freestyle division of the CISM World Championships will be held Saturday, October 28 and Sunday, October 29 at Camp Lejeune.
