UPDATE: Army wins the 2000 Armed Forces Greco-Roman Championship with four individual champions, March 17

The U.S. Army won all three of its dual meets to win the team title at the 2000 Armed Forces Greco-Roman Championships at the Naval Air Station Whiting Field in Pensacola, Fla., March 17.

The U.S. Army defended its team title with wins over the U.S. Navy, 29-1, the U.S. Air Force, 20-9, and the U.S. Marine Corps, 16-14.

The U.S. Marine Corps placed second in the team race with a 2-1 team record, scoring team victories over the U.S. Air Force, 16-15, and the U.S. Navy, 24-8. The U.S. Air Force was 1-2 and finished in third place as a team, and the U.S. Navy was fourth with an 0-3 record.

The Army had the most individual champions with four, including Mujaahid Maynard at 127.75 pounds, Glenn Nieradka at 138.75 pounds, Shon Lewis at 152 pounds and Dremiel Byers at 286 pounds.

The Marine Corps had three individual champions: Jacob Clark at 167.5 pounds, Ken Owens at 187.25 and Dan Hicks at 213.75 pounds.

The Air Force also had one individual champion: Jeff Cervone at 119 pounds.

Due to improper protest procedures, the original match between Ken Owens of the Marine Corps and Aaron Sieracki of the Army was found to be valid, and therefore, the protest re-match was not recognized. The original bout was scored where Owens won by a referee's decision, 2-2, in overtime. Owens is the Armed Forces champion at 187.25 pounds and qualified for the Olympic Trials.

The U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force teams are stationed in Colorado Springs, Colo., while the U.S. Navy team is stationed in Pensacola, Fla. and the U.S. Marine Corps team is stationed in Quantico, Va.

The U.S. Army won both the freestyle and the Greco-Roman competition at the 1999 Armed Forces Wrestling Championship, which was held at the Post Field House in Fort Carson, Colo.

Champions in the Greco-Roman division qualify for the Challenge Tournament at the 2000 U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team Trials in Dallas, Texas, June 22-24. This is the first qualifying event for the 2000 Olympic Trials.

The freestyle competition will be held on Saturday, March 18, with sessions held at 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Awards will be presented mat side after every other weight class for both freestyle and Greco-Roman.
