The University of Vermont
The University of Vermont (UVM) is pleased to offer an introductory course on Olympic Weightlifting this coming spring, taught by Chris Polakowski, New England Weightlifting Hall of Fame inductee and coach to several Team USA and Team Canada competitors in the past ten years.
The course will answer questions on why Weightlifting is extensively used by both athletes in power sports and in CrossFit programs. The sport of Weightlifting will also be looked at from a historical and informational perspective. From these lectures, students will gain insights on the reasons for the rationale of Weightlifting as a means of functional strength training.
During training sessions, students will learn how to go from never experiencing the exercises before to being competent in performing the lifts.
Students will leave the course understanding what muscles are developed and how they are involved in the movements. Each student will be able to properly execute the Snatch and Clean & Jerk within the first class. Students will learn why these exercises should be a primary consideration for developing a power sport athlete, as well as anyone interested in staying highly functional. Finally, students will understand how Weightlifting has evolved from its start as a sport in the first modern Olympic games in 1896.
To register for this course, please go to UVM’s Continuing Education website http://learn.uvm.edu/register/ and follow the steps to enroll as either a returning student (have taken a UVM course in the past) or a new student (never taken a UVM course).
