High Performance Coaches

Want to be a National High Performance Coach?

The USA Volleyball High Performance Coaches' Pipeline is comprised of highly motivated volleyball coaches who are committed to helping USA Volleyball identify and develop the USA Olympians of the future.  Coaches are trained in the U.S. National Teams' skill and system model, coach USAV HP's training and competition programs, and enjoy a nationwide network of some of the top volleyball coaches in the USA.

USAV High Performance Coaches come from all different backgrounds: NCAA Division I coaches, current and former National Team players and coaches, international coaches, junior club coaches, high school coaches, junior high coaches - you name it.  All that is required is a desire to learn, a love to teach, an open mind, a great attitude, and a passion for USA Volleyball and helping our U.S. National Volleyball Teams win gold medals.

Are you interested in working with USAV High Performance? Please follow the steps in the checklist below to get started as a USA Volleyball High Performance Coach.  Returning HP Coaches should follow the instructions in the italics.

1. New Coaches: Complete a USA Volleyball National HP Coaches’ Application.
Completing this form is the first step to indicate your interest in working with USAV HP and will place you on our HP Coaches’ e-mail list to receive important information regarding tryouts and programs. In addition, please send a digital photo of yourself, shoulders up, to indoorhp@usav.org.

It is required that all HP Coaches are current, registered members of USA Volleyball, pass a background screen through USAV, and are USAV IMPACT Certified. For all summer and holiday programs, you may also be required to hold a minimum level of CAP Certification, as well.  Please click here to see the overall criteria necessary to work as a USAV HP Coach.

Returning HP Coaches:  Log into your account using the link above and update your USA Volleyball National HP Coaches' Application.  This must be completed annually to ensure you do not miss any information.  If you cannot log in for any reason, please send an e-mail to indoorhp@usav.org for your user name and password.

2. Complete the 2014 USAV HP Tryout Availability Form for [GIRLS] or [BOYS] (Click link to complete form)
Review the 2014 USAV HP tryout schedule (Girls' or Boys') and determine which tryouts you are able to attend. Completing the form above will notify USAV HP of the fact that you will be attending the tryouts that you specify. Once you submit the form, it will be immediately received by the HP Office. You will receive notification in the weeks and days before each tryout with additional information and your assignment for the tryout.  If you need to make adjustments to your availability, simply submit a new form – USAV will only look at the most recent version.

3. Volunteer at 2014 USAV High Performance Tryouts.
We ask that all USAV HP Coaches attend at least one tryout per year, although many attend multiple tryouts (and some attend as many as 5 or 6!). Working a minimum of one tryout is required for placement as a coach in a program that summer. Tryouts are typically before or after a National Qualifier or other large tournament, so HP coaches simply adjust their travel schedule to arrive a little early or stay a little longer so they can attend a tryout. Coaches who work tryouts should be VERY familiar with the 2014 HP Tryout Plan (coming soon) and Physical Testing Procedures.

4. For Girls' Coaches ONLY - Complete the 2014 USAV HP Summer Program Availability Form (Click link to complete form)
Review the 2014 USAV HP Program schedule and determine which programs you are able to work in the summer of 2014. Completing the form above will notify USAV simply of your availability for the summer. The USAV HP office will assign coaches to programs based on a number of factors.

2014 HP Coaching Invitation Timeline
January 1, 2014 – National Team Coaches and HP Championship and Program Head Coaches Named

February 1, 2014 – May 1, 2014 – Initial Girls’ Program Associate Head and Assistant Coaches Invited (Returning, active HP coaches)

April 1, 2014 – All Boys’ Program Coaches Invited

May 15, 2014 – Additional Assistant and Apprentice Coaches Invited (New and returning HP coaches)

USAV HP understands that coaches plan summer camp coaching positions as early in the year as possible. If you have not received an invitation by May 15, 2014, you may assume that you will not receive an invitation this year, but know that we will keep you in mind for next year.

Please know that we receive more interest and applications annually than positions available. USAV HP is committed to providing the athletes the best coaching experience possible while working to allow new coaches the opportunity to get involved. New HP coaches are typically considered only for camp positions in the first year.

5. Contact your USA Volleyball Region and find out about working with Region High Performance.
Many regions of USA Volleyball sponsor Region High Performance programs, including development camps and High Performance teams that attend USA Volleyball’s High Performance Championships each summer. Working with your local region is a great way to get involved, gain HP experience, and provide many of the top players in your region with the highest level coaching available. Please click here to see if your region sponsors an HP program and for contact information for that program.

6. Attend the USA Volleyball High Performance Coaches’ Clinic in February.
The annual High Performance Coaches’ Clinic is the ultimate opportunity to “jump head first” into the world of coaching with High Performance. The HP Coaches’ Clinic gives coaches the opportunity to learn from some of the world’s best coaches as they discuss and explain High Performance and National Team techniques, systems, and training. Past headliners have included our current and former National Team coaches, NCAA National Championship coaches, Junior and Youth National Team coaches, and some of the leaders of our USAV High Performance Coaches Pipeline. In addition, the Coaches’ Clinic allows coaches the opportunity to network and “talk shop” with the clinic presenters and attendees, most of whom are other High Performance coaches. Click here for more information about the 2014 HP Coaches’ Clinic.

7. Begin or continue USA Volleyball's Coaching Accreditation Program (CAP).
USAV High Performance supports continuing coaching education for coaches of all levels and years of experience. Invitation preference for HP Programs is given to coaches who have achieved and maintain CAP certification and those who continue to progress through each level of CAP. Many of our USAV HP Coaches are also CAP Cadre, helping to teach CAP courses across the country. Please click here for more information about CAP certification.
