COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 26, 2014) – The U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team, ranked second in the world, will compete in the prestigious Montreux Volley Masters tournament being held May 27 to June 1 in Montreux, Switzerland.

The event, which features seven of the top nine teams in the world, has two pools of four competing in a preliminary round-robin format. The U.S. is grouped in Pool B with No. 3 Japan, No. 8 Dominican Republic and No. 9 Germany. Pool A includes No. 1 Brazil, No. 5 China, No. 6 Russia and host Switzerland.

The U.S. Women open the 29th edition of the Montreux Volley Masters against Germany on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., followed by Japan on Wednesday at 9 p.m. The Americans are idle on Thursday before concluding the round-robin pool play on Friday against NORCECA rival Dominican Republic at 9 p.m. All match times are local Swiss time.

The top two teams each preliminary pool advance to the semifinals that begin on May 31, followed by the medal round on June 1.

Team USA’s 14-player roster includes four middle blockers, four outside hitters, two opposites, two setters and two liberos. The middle blockers are Rachael Adams (Cincinnati, Ohio), Tori Dixon (Burnsville, Minn.), Christa Harmotto (Hopewell Township, Pa.) and Lauren Paolini (Ann Arbor, Mich.). The outside hitters are Kristin Hildebrand (Orem, Utah), Kim Hill (Portland, Ore.), Sonja Newcombe (Lake Arrowhead, Calif.) and Kelsey Robinson (Bartlett, Ill.).

The American rosters competing at Montreux are Juliann Faucette (San Diego, Calif.) and Ebony Nwanebu (Fairview, Texas). The setters are Courtney Thompson (Kent, Wash.) and Jenna Hagglund (West Chester, Ohio), while the liberos are Nicole Davis (Stockton, Calif.) and Natalie Hagglund (Encinitas, Calif.).

Team USA’s roster includes three Olympians – Davis, Harmotto and Thompson – to help balance out a roster that will have five players making their international senior level debut in Dixon, Natalie Hagglund Newcombe, Nwanebu and Robinson. Nwanebu is the only player on the roster with remaining collegiate eligibility, who will be a sophomore at University of Southern California this coming fall. Other than the newcomers, the remainder of the roster were part of the U.S. roster in 2013 including Hildebrand as its captain.

The U.S. last competed in the Montreux Volley Masters in 2011 as it finished fourth. The Americans earned the silver medal at the 2010 edition behind gold-medalist China.

Brazil won the most recent Montreux Volley Masters last year by defeating runner-up Russia.
