COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 11, 2014) – U.S. women’s beach volleyball teams took the gold and silver medals on Sunday at the NORCECA Continental Tour event in Antigua, Guatemala.

In the women’s final, Tealle Hunkus (Girard, Ohio) and Kim (McGiven) Dicello (San Diego) defeated their U.S. compatriots Traci Weamer (Upland, Calif.) and Kendra VanZwieten (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), 21-15, 26-24.

It is the third NORCECA medal for Hunkus and Dicello this season. They took gold in Cayman Islands and bronze in Guatemala City.

In the semifinals, Hunkus and McGiven defeated Cubans Lianma Flores and Leila Martinez, 26-24, 18-21, 15-10. Weamer and VanZweiten also had a tough semifinal match against Costa Ricans Karen Cope and Natalia Alfaro, before winning 21-13, 22-24, 19-17.

“We had a wonderful time here in Antigua, Guatemala. The city is beautiful and the people are very warm. It was a great experience,” Dicello said. “We played with the right mental state, which made a difference from our performance last week in Guatemala City.”

Hunkus added: “I feel we did a better job here in Antigua. The adjustments we made worked out well.”

Among the U.S. men’s teams competing in Guatemala, Derek Olson (Eugene, Ore.) and Kevin McColloch (Solano Beach, Calif.) finished fifth while Adam Roberts (High Point, N.C.) and Bill Kolinske (Big Bend, Wis.) placed eighth.
