COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 10, 2014) – U.S. beach teams ended their runs at the FIVB Puerto Vallarta Open on Friday and Saturday in Mexico.

The U.S. women’s team of Christal Engle (Pallyup, Wash.) and Heather Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.), seeded No. 20, and the U.S. men’s team of Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Theo Brunner (Ridgefield, Conn.), seeded No. 5, each finished tied for fifth after making it to the third round.
Engle and Hughes finished pool play undefeated and advanced straight to Saturday’s second round, where they defeated Canada’s No. 19 Kacie MacTavish 2 Caleigh Whitaker, 17-21, 21-16, 15-7 in 46 minutes. In the third round, Engle and Hughes fell to Germany’s Chantal Laboureur and Julia Sude, 22-20, 16-21, 15-5 in 47 minutes.
Rogers and Brunner finished pool play at 2-1 and advanced to the first round of single elimination, where they beat Norway’s No. 17 Oivind Hordvik and Kvamsdal Morten, 24-22, 21-16 in 39 minutes. Rogers and Brunner defeated Brazil’s No. 26 Marcio Araujo and Thiago Barbosa in the second round, 20-22, 21-16, 15-9 in 54 minutes. But in the third round, the U.S. pair fell to Italy’s No. 14 Paolo and Matteo Ingrosso, 21-18, 21-14 in 40 minutes.
Among other U.S. men’s teams, John Hyden (Pensacola, Fla.) and Tri Bourne (Aiea, Hawaii), seeded No. 11, went 3-0 in pool play and advanced to the second round where they fell to China’s No. 18 Cheng Chen and Jian Li, 15-21, 21-19, 16-14 in 58 minutes.
No. 27 Brad Keenan (Westminster, Calif.) and John Mayer (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) won their first-round match over Venezuela’s No. 23 Jackson Henriquez and Leonard Alexis Colina Chourio (21-15, 17-21, 15-10 in 49 minutes), but lost in the second round to the Ingrosso brothers, 21-18, 21-12 in 39 minutes.
The U.S. women’s team of Jennifer Fopma (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.), seeded No. 4, finished pool play 2-1 and advanced to the first round of single elimination, where they defeated Germany’s No. 22 Kim Behrens and Sandra Seyfferth, 21-18, 21-13 in 35 minutes. Fopma and Pavlik lost in the second round to China’s No. 3 Chen Xue and Xinyi Xia, 21-17, 18-21, 15-13 in 51 minutes.
NORCECA BEACH TOUR
Three out of four U.S. teams began pool play at the NORCECA Continental Tour event in Antigua, Guatemala on Friday.
The fourth team of Tealle Hunkus (Girard, Ohio) and Kim (McGiven) Dicello (San Diego) played all of their pool play matches on Saturday.
The women’s team of Traci Weamer (Upland, Calif.) and Kendra VanZwieten went 1-1 in pool play as did the men’s team of Derek Olson (Eugene, Ore.) and Kevin McColloch (Solano Beach, Calif.). Adam Roberts (High Point, N.C.) and Bill Kolinske (Big Bend, Wis.) are 0-1.
