Hyden Bourne Undefeated on Day 1
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 8, 2014) – The U.S. men’s beach team of John Hyden and Tri Bourne went undefeated in pool play on Wednesday at the FIVB Puerto Vallarta Open in Mexico.

Hyden (Pensacola, Fla.) and Bourne (Aiea, Hawaii), seeded No. 11 in the main draw, took wins over their U.S. compatriots No. 27 Brad Keenan and John Mayer (21-12, 19-21, 15-11 in 53 minutes) and China’s No. 22 Cong Yang and Jiaxin Wu (21-13, 21-10 in 35 minutes).
Keenan and Mayer, who had to win a qualification match on Tuesday to get to the main draw, came back to win their second pool play match on Wednesday over Switzerland’s No. 6 Philip Gabathuler and Mirco Gerson, 21-18, 21-17 in 36 minutes.
The U.S. team of Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Theo Brunner (Ridgefield, Conn.), seeded No. 5, also went 1-1 on Wednesday, defeating Australia’s No. 28 Sam Boehm and Cole Durant (22-20, 21-18 in 37 minutes) and losing to Germany’s No. 21 Armin Dollinger and Clemens Wickler (21-14, 19-21, 16-14 in 52 minutes).
Will Montgomery (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Stafford Slick (Andover, Minn.), seeded No. 13, lost both their pool play matches on Wednesday and will try to come back and win their final match on Thursday against Chile’s No. 4 Esteban Grimalt and Marco Grimalt.
Women’s pool play also begins on Thursday. The U.S. team of Christal Engle (Pallyup, Wash.) and Heather Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.) got a bye out of the qualification bracket and are seeded No. 20. Jennifer Fopma (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.) are seeded No. 4.
