CHULA VISTA, Calif. – The 2014 Chula Vista Beach Collegiate Challenge crowned Pepperdine’s Kelley Larsen and Kellie Woolever the tournament champions.
After two rounds of play, Pepperdine advanced four teams, while Hawaii had three move on and Grand Canyon sported one team. The No. 1 and 2 teams for Pepperdine and Hawaii both advanced to the semifinals but it would be the No. 2 squads from each school squaring off in the championship.
Pepperdine captured the first set 21-18 and in the second both teams battled high winds and a small scoring margin of two points before Hawaii pulled ahead, 21-16.
The score remained close in the third, with the wind playing a factor in either teams gaining a lead before UH went up 8-6. Coming up with momentum for their second come-from-behind win of the day, Pepperdine closed out the championship run by taking the set 15-10.
