TAKE 5 with USA Sitting Volleyball's Katie Holloway

June 23, 2014, 10:48 a.m. (ET)

It's exciting to watch our children excel at the sports they love. Working hard toward a personal best or perfecting a specific technique are critical to success, but let’s also remember that playing multiple sports can be tremendously beneficial in the long run – and a lot of fun for our kids.

Branching out from just one sport offers youth athletes both physical and mental benefits, from enhancing current skills to learning to appreciate the new skills required by a different sport.

Liberty Mutual Insurance Responsible Sports sat down with USA Paralympic Sitting Volleyball National Team member Katie Holloway to get her thoughts on playing multiple sports.

In our exclusive TAKE 5 interview, Katie told us that growing up, she “tried every sport.” Katie’s list of sports played runs the gamut from softball to soccer to basketball to golf to, of course, volleyball.

Katie said that playing all those different sports helped her develop superior hand-eye coordination, and that softball helped her develop her volleyball arm swing, while basketball helped her hone her overall coordination.

Katie added that playing so many sports also made her “mentally tough.”

“I always had to play able-bodied sports, so that helped make me mentally tough to be able to withstand such a mental game as volleyball,” recalled Katie. “Volleyball is a lot of strategy and finesse. It’s not easy if you aren’t mentally tough.”

Katie also shared her story of how, when and why she decided to specialize in volleyball in this exclusive interview. She added that she still plays some basketball, and dabbles in rowing as well.

“I have tried rowing, which was an amazing cross-training sport,” said Katie. “Rowing provided me with amazing strength and poise. Basketball just gives me great conditioning, and is still fun to play.”
