Two U.S. Beach Teams in Moscow Semis
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 14, 2014) – Two U.S. beach teams have advanced to the semifinals of the FIVB Grand Slam in Moscow.
Top men’s seeds Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and No. 2 women’s seeds Kerri Walsh Jennings (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) will both play in Sunday’s semifinals and medal matches.
Dalhausser and Rosenthal will face Poland’s No. 14 Grzegorz Fijalek and Mariusz Prudel in Sunday’s second semifinal. The winner will play the winner of the first semi between Italy’s No. 5 Paolo Nicolai and Daniele Lupo and Russia’s No. 9 Konstantin Semenov and Viacheslav Krasilnikov.
In the women’s draw, Walsh and Ross will face Netherlands’ No. 13 Marleen van Iersel and Madelein Meppelink. Spain’s No. 7 Liliana Fernandez and Elsa Baquerizo will then face Brazil’s No. 1 Talita Antunes and Taiana Lima.
Among other U.S. women’s teams competing, No. 11 Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Brooke Sweat (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) fell to Ross and Walsh Jennings in the second round (21-15, 21-15) and finished tied for ninth. In the first round, Fendrick and Sweat defeated No. 19 Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.) and Jennifer Fopma (Costa Mesa, Calif.), 21-14, 21-19. Pavlik and Fopma finished 17th.
In the men’s bracket, Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.) fell to Dalhausser and Rosenthal in the second round (21-13, 21-11) and finished tied for ninth.
