Record number of teams compete at Junior Beach Tour Championships

Sunday saw 12 teams claim titles at the Junior Beach Tour Championship at Bradford Beach. Of 307 teams that made their way to the event, four took top nods on the boys’ side, while eight girls’ teams were named champions.


Smashing last year’s turnout, the 2014 installment of the JBT Championship had 307 teams play over the three-day event. Matches on center court were live streamed on the USA Volleyball website, offering fans at home the opportunity to watch the premier tournament.

Sporting 263 girls’ teams, each age group would crown a champion for the club and championship divisions.

For the U12 club, Leitshuh/Gorys finished ahead of Pullen/Closset. Claiming the title in the open division was Devers/Jackson, Speicher/Funk taking second.

The U14 club division saw Anderson/Selsky win the title, followed by Stuart/Martin in silver. Fifty-one teams battled it out in the championship division, but it would be Mahi/Weideman for the win and Hughes/Conner in second.

A good turnout of 31 teams competed in U16 club, which Lownds/Olson finished first and Johnson/Pena in second.

Also with 51 teams, a record for a single division at this year’s event, the U16 championship division winners were Simpkins/Grandy and in second, Schnieder/Smith.

Forty-nine teams played in the U18 age group, Toland/Abbott and Ferry/Schick taking one and two, respectively, in the club division.

Wrapping up the three-day event was the U18 championship girls’ match, which saw Wilson/Pickrell come out on top to outlast Hoven/McAfee for gold.

The team of Carter/Meyerson led the way for the boys’ U12 field, followed by Haferman and Roloff in second and Garcia/Chacon, Moody-Gonzales/Conlin in third.

In the U14 division, Gibbs and Roden finished with gold while twins Dan and Brett Gould scooped up silver, with Ward/Salter and Schulte/Kraninger taking bronze.

With 13 teams in the field, play was competitive for the boys’ U16 division. Tops was Mickol and Szuba, with Dake and Voelkl taking second and the teams of Sims/Albers, Lock/Colburn finishing in third.

The U18 match gave fans a high flying spectacle with Turner and Podrasky moving past Menger and Crawford. Finishing in third was Feltz/Kerlin, Hoppe/Wessel.
