U17 Beach Teams Go 3-1 on Day 1
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 16, 2014) – U.S. beach teams went 3-1 on Wednesday, Day 1 of the inaugural U17 FIVB World Championship in Acapulco, Mexico.
On the women’s side, second-seeded Morgan Martin (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and Kathryn Plummer (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) dominated Benin’s No. 26 seeded team of Adama Arouna and Lacoussa Odette Tohe, 21-2, 21-5. The pair will face No. 23 Paraskevi Kourtidou and Maria Klepkou of Greece on Thursday, followed by Portugal’s No. 14 Beatriz Lacerda and Margarida Vasques in Pool B action.
The No. 17-seeded U.S. team of Joy Dennis (Cypress, Calif.) and Haley Hallgren (South Lake, Texas) upset No. 5 Martyna Kloda and Monika Warczyglowa of Poland, 21-17, 21-10, in Pool E play. Dennis and Hallgren will take on Russia’s No. 8 Elizaveta Zayonchkovskaya and Yulia Smirnova and New Zealand’s No. 5 Georgia Louise Coughlan and Emily Johnston on Thursday.
On the men’s side, No. 5-seeded Will Bantle (Oakland, Calif.) and Robert Mullahey (Los Angeles, Calif.) downed Mexico’s No. 20 Carlos Hernandez and Wilfrido Martinez, 21-12, 21-17 in Pool E play.
No. 16 Lucas Lossone (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Aidan Brown (Santa Fe, N.M.) lost to Puerto Rico’s No. 9 Ricardo Muratti Gustavo and Buitrago Alemañy, 28-26, 23-21 in Pool D action.
Bantle and Mullahey will take on Netherlands’ No. 17 Nikita Artamonov and Mees Blom along with Australia’s No. 8 Adam Kitto 2 Bryce Poland on Thursday. Lossone and Brown will take on New Zealand’s No. 4 Gregory Vukets and Sean Hone along with Italy’s No. 21 Paolo Di Silvestre and Manuel Alfieri.
