Women's Beach Teams Take Gold, Bronze

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 14, 2014) – U.S. women’s beach teams won gold and bronze on Sunday at the NORCECA Tour event in North Bay, Ontario, Canada.

Tealle Hunkus (Girard, Ohio) and Kim DiCello (San Diego, Calif.) captured their third NORCECA gold medal of the season with a 21-11, 26-24 win over Canada’s Melissa Humaña and Taylor Pischke.

“It is great to win for the third time this year and hopefully we can win more,” Hunkus said in a NORCECA press release. “We really communicated very well as a team.”

“I also want to congratulate the organizers in North Bay with the volunteers doing a great job. The atmosphere was great and the sight surrounding the courts,” she added.

Hunkus and Dicello won a semifinal thriller over compatriots Kendra VanZwieten (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Allison Daley (Grass Valley, Calif.) 21-19, 21-19, 19-17. Humaña and Pischke advanced to the finals with a 21-13, 21-17 victory over Canada’s Victoria Altomare and Julie Gordon.

The bronze medal went to VanZwieten and Daley who brushed aside Altomare and Gordon 21-17, 21-11. It was VanZwieten and Daley’s second NORCEA medal this year.
