U.S. Beach Teams Qualify in Gstaad

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 9, 2014) – Two U.S. men’s beach teams qualified for the main draw on Wednesday at the FIVB Gstaad Grand Slam while U.S. women’s teams went 4-4 on the first day of pool play.

Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Theo Brunner (Ridgefield, Conn.), seeded No. 7 in qualifying, defeated Qatar’s No. 10 Tiago Santos and Jefferson Pereira, 21-19, 21-15. Nick Lucena (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Ryan Doherty (Toms River, N.J.), seeded No. 2 in the qualification bracket, defeated Spain’s No. 15 Francisco Alfredo Marco and Christian Garcia, 21-17, 21-23.

Brunner said he made improvements to his game during the qualifying match.

“I haven’t been blocking that well recently so I was focusing on my blocking and that worked out really well,” Brunner said in an FIVB release. “I was a little shaky on some of the sets and we could have had a bigger spread, but we got the win and are into the main tournament.”

Rogers and Brunner are seeded No. 28 in Pool E. Lucena and Doherty are seeded No. 16 and will share Pool A with compatriots Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Fla.).

Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.) are seeded No. 13 in Pool D.

On the women’s side, the U.S. teams of Kerri Walsh Jennings (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.), seeded No. 1, and Jennifer Fopma (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.), seeded No. 29, both went 2-0 in pool play on Wednesday.

Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Summer Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.), seeded No. 16, and Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Brooke Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.), seeded No. 12, each finished the day 0-2.

On Thursday, women’s pool play will conclude while the men’s will begin.
