Waiting with baited breath, the Vaqueros fans were emotionally invested in every point of Saturday’s gold medal bout. You could tell this one was special for Vaqueros.

“We have finished second so many times,” Vaqueros head coach Carlos Torres said as tears rolled down his face. “This win means so much for us, to finally be first. These kids deserve it.”

The match got off to a good start for Vaqueros, as the boys won 25-18 to take the early lead.  Vaqueros quickly faced adversity however, as they dropped the second set after Borinquen Coqui jumped out to a 7-0 start.

“We had to keep calm going into the third set,” Torres said. “I told them to just stay focused and that we were in good shape.”

Vaqueros listened it would seem, as the steady-handed Puerto Ricans took the final drama-filled set 16-14.

It was quite a scene afterwards, as a tearful Vaqueros squad was relieved to finally reach the mountaintop.

“Vaqueros is a proud league,” Torres said. “We have been trying for so long to get here, the players were always good enough to get here and it’s great that they can see that now.”
