HOUSTON, Texas – Puerto Rico’s Ultimate Volleyball System Club-17 team capped off an impressive run at the Boys Junior National Championship on Saturday, after the boys defeated Mountain View Volleyball Club 25-17, 21-25, 15-8 to claim gold in the 17-year-old club division.

On paper MVVC had the size and the strength, but UVS head coach Jonathan Vila knew his team had the heart.

“We knew their size was going to be a challenge today,” Vila said. “We tried moving the ball around as fast as we could, so they (MVVC) couldn’t set up at the net. It didn’t matter how tall they were they, my guys are always battling that, but we always win with heart.”

Their heart was tested after falling in the second set 21-25, to notch the match up at one a piece. Coach Vila never lost faith.

“I told them to just keep calm and keep defending,” Vila said. “If we stuck to our game plan we would be fine, I had no doubts. I had to get my players to believe that.”

UVS finished off the BJNC with an undefeated record, as they gave Puerto Rico its fifth gold medal at the championships.
