Pacific Rim Tops Balboa Bay for 17 Open title
HOUSTON – Pacific Rim 17-1 was solid in their championship-match win against Balboa Bay 17Asics, taking the title for #BJNC 17 Open, 25-20, 25-20.
In the opening set, the clubs were primarily evenly matched through the 11-8 mark, which saw Pacific Rim with the lead. Points provided by well-placed tips allowed Pacific Rim to stretch the lead over Balboa Bay 17-10.
Shaking off Balboa Bay advances, Pacific Rim cruised to cap the first from 25-20.
“After the start of the set we were serving better and overall played better,” Pacific Rim head coach Roger Worsley said. “It was a group effort to establish a temp and we did that to keep them off balance.”
The second frame started neck and neck, with ties at 3, 5 and 6-all. The lead exchanged hands several times before Pacific Rim collected a three-point margin, 12-9.
Balboa Bay surged back to tie it 15-15 and took a brief lead at 18-19. Pacific Rim found itself behind but still played a composed game, allowing the squad to rally back 24-19 before taking the set and match, 25-20.
“Talk is cheap, but we’ve been talking about this moment all year. We’ve tried to come back and establish who we are since we left off in January,” Worsley said. “We didn’t look ahead of ourselves while here – we took it one game at a time and that set the tone for us and this moment.”
