Balboa Bay Wins 15 Open at #BJNC with a boom
HOUSTON – Balboa Bay made quick work of the 15 Open championship match against San Clemente, 25-16, 25-18, during the sixth day of the Boys’ Junior National Championship.
Balboa Bay started the first set strong, opening 8-4, as both teams played at a steady pace. Neither team wasted time between points, which saw the score reach 18-10 quickly after the start of the match.
San Clemente tried to freeze the Balboa Bay streak with a timeout, but by 21-13, their effort to chip away at the deficit came too late for a comeback, capping the frame 25-16.
“We tell our guys we have to break the match down to groups of three,” Balboa Bay head coach Greg Ford said. “If we win those mini games, we’ll be successful.”
In the second set, the teams made it a point-for-point matchup. Balboa Bay led by three, 8-5, trying to stretch the lead. San Clemente came within one, 9-8, but it didn’t take long before Balboa Bay found its groove and forced more ground to cover in their 15-9 advantage.
Balboa Bay made a break for the title, making quick work of the set, leading 20-12 with its cool, collected composure until the final point that granted them the title with a 2-0 sweep, 25-16, 25-18.
“We tell our guys that we can’t just win on talent alone. We have to play together, as a team and never get too high or low,” Ford said. “This team has played together for two years and they’ve grown as a group. They started with lofty goals and they met them today.”
