Road to BJNC Reaches Halfway Point

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Jan. 23, 2014) – The road to the 35th Annual USA Volleyball Boys' Junior National Championships (BJNC) crosses the midpoint this weekend at the Northeastern Boys’ Bid Tournament being held Jan. 25-26 at the York Expo Center in York, Pa.

The Northeastern Boys’ Bid Tournament will have up to three BJNC bids awarded in 16 Open, 15 Open and 14 Open Divisions. The 16 Open Division has 22 teams registered, while the 15 Open Division has 15 teams signed up. The 14 Open Division has 19 clubs registered to compete for a spot in the BJNC.

The 56 teams are battling for berths into the BJNC, which takes place June 28 to July 5 in Houston at the George R. Brown Convention Center. The BJNC will crown winners in 12 divisions with Open titles for U14, U15, U16, U17 and U18 Divisions. Further, seven Club Division championships will be held in age groups from 12 to 18.

The road to the BJNC started the opening week of 2014. Balboa Bay dominated the SCVA Junior Boys’ Invitational in the first bid tournament of the year held Jan. 3-5 at Anaheim, Calif. The club captured the Open titles in 18s, 17s and 15s. A total of 44 BJNC Open bids were awarded during the event.

During the second week of qualifying, Spiral 18 UA from Arizona captured the 18 Open title in the No Dinx/NCVA Boys’ Bid Tournament held Jan. 11-12 in San Mateo, Calif. The other four Open Division winners hailed from host Northern California Volleyball Association. A total of 13 BJNC Open bids were awarded during the event.

At the Rochester Cam-Am held Jan. 18-19 in Rochester, N.Y., history was made when Chesapeake Region’s Braddock Road U14 won the club’s first-ever Boys’ Bid Tournament title with the 14 Open Division gold medal. Yorktowne Blue won the 18 Open title while Pace Bootlegger 17-1 Black won the 17 Open title in its hometown.

The NetLynx Boys’ Winter Volleyball Championship, which merged the Great Lakes Boys’ Festival and the Wisconsin Boys’ Festival into one event held Jan. 18-20 at McCormick Place in Chicago, had up to six BJNC bids available for each age group. Ultimate B18 Gold from Great Lakes Region won the 18 Open title, while West Allis took team titles in the 17 Open and 14 Open divisions.
