Gibb, Patterson Advance to Semifinals in Stare Jablonki

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 23, 2014) - The U.S. men’s beach team of Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson advanced to Sunday’s semifinals of the FIVB Stare Jablonki Grand Slam in Poland. 

Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.), seeded No. 12, defeated Spain’s No. 8 Pablo Herrera and Adran Gavira, 31-29, 21-18, 15-11, in the second round on Saturday, and later defeated compatriots John Hyden and Tri Bourne, 26-24, 21-13, in the third round. The duo will face Brazil’s No. 7 Pedro Salgado and Alvaro Morais Filho in the semifinals on Sunday. 

Latvia's No. 5 Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Janis Smedins and Austria's No. 17 Clemens Doppler and Alexander Horst will face off in the other semifinal match. 

So far on the 2014 Grand Slam Tour, Gibb and Patterson’s best finish was a quarterfinal appearance in Shanghai. 

In the second round, the U.S. beach team of Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Calif.), seeded No. 2, defeated Canada’s No. 19 Chaim Schalk and Ben Saxton, 21-13, 21-15. In the third round, the pair fell to Brazil’s No. 7 Pedro and Alvaro, 21-18, 21-13. They finished the tournament tied for fifth place. 

No. 6 Hyden (Pensacola, Fla.) and Bourne (Aiea, Hawaii) upset Brazil’s No. 3 Alison Cerutti and Bruno Oscar Schmidt, 21-19, 21-15, in the second round, and later fell to compatriots Gibb and Patterson in the third round. The duo finished the tournament tied for fifth place.
