Caputo, Muno Advance Past Pool Play At Youth Olympics
NANJING, China (Aug. 22, 2014) - The U.S. beach team of Skylar Caputo (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Susannah “Zana” Muno (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) advanced to the Nanjing Youth Olympic playoffs, after knocking off Vietnam’s Thi Tu and Thi Le in straight sets, 21-19, 21-7.
The beach duo finished fourth in their respective pool, with a 2-3 overall record.
Caputo and Muno will face France's Alexia Richard and Lezana Placette in the round of 24 on Sunday, to continue their run at the Youth Olympics.
On the men’s side, the American pair of Torey “T.J.” DeFalco (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Louis Richard (Redondo Beach, Calif.) were ousted by Austria’s Johannes Kratz and Moritz Pristauz-Telsnigg, 24-22, 21-17, in their final pool match. The loss brought DeFalco and Richard’s Youth Olympic journey to a close, as the tandem finished fifth in Pool F with a 1-4 overall record.
“The Austrians found a way to exploit our weaknesses, especially in defense, they were stronger tonight,” Richard said. “Nanjing was a great experience. We know we need to work on and improve.”
The 24-team single-elimination bracket begins on Sunday, with the round of 16 following immediately after.
