U.S. Teams Advance in Stare Jablonki

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 21, 2014) – The U.S. men’s beach teams of Ryan Doherty and Nick Lucena and also Sean Rosenthal and Phil Dalhausser each went 2-0 in pool play at the FIVB Stare Jablonki Grand Slam in Poland on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the U.S. women’s beach teams competing in Poland completed play on Thursday.

Doherty (Toms River, N.J.) and Lucena (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), seeded No. 10, defeated Qatar’s No. 23 Tiago De J Santos and Jefferson Santos Pereira, 21-13, 25-23, and later defeated Germany’s No. 26 Sebastian Dollinger and Lars Fluggen, 22-20, 16-21, 15-10. The duo takes on Brazil’s No. 7 Pedro Solberg Salgado and Alvaro Filho to wrap up pool play on Friday.

Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.), seeded No.2, defeated Poland’s No. 31 Michal Bryl and Kacper Kujawiak, 21-15, 21-11, and later defeated Austria’s No. 18 Alexander Huber and Robin Seidl, 21-17, 22-20. The pair will take on Germany’s No. 15 Markus Bockermann and Mischa Urbatzka on Friday.

The U.S. men’s beach team of John Hyden (Pensacola, Fla.) and Tri Bourne (Aiea, Hawaii), seeded No. 6, got an automatic win after Norway’s No. 27 Oivind Hordvik and Kvamsdal Morten had to forfeit due to an injury. The U.S. duo later fell to Netherlands’ No. 22 Reinder Nummberdor and Christiaan Varenhorst, 21-13, 21-19. They will compete against Netherlands’ No. 11 Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen on Friday.

Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.) fell to Poland’s No. 21 Bartosz Losiak and Piotr Kantor, 22-20, 19-21, 23-21, and later defeated Estonia’s No. 28  Kristo Kollo and Rivo Vesik, 21-15, 21-15. They face Latvia’s No. 5 Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Janis Smedins to wrap up pool play.

On Friday, men’s pool play will conclude and the first round of single elimination will begin.

On the women’s side, the U.S. beach team of Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Summer Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.), seeded No. 18, fell to Netherlands’ No. 31 Rimke Braakman and Jantine Van der Vlist, 21-19, 21-18 to wrap up pool play. In the first round, the duo fell to Germany’s No. 4 Katrin Holtwich and Ilka Semmler, 21-19, 21-16. They finished the tournament tied for 17th

Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.) and Heather Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.), seeded No. 27, fell to Russia’s No. 22 Maria Prokopeva and Ekaterina Syrtseva, 25-23, 25-23. They finished the tournament tied for 25th.
