Gibb, Patterson Qualify for Main Draw in Stare Jablonki

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 20, 2014) – The U.S. beach team of Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson qualified for the main draw on Wednesday at the FIVB Stare Jablonki Grand Slam in Stare Jablonki, Poland.

Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.), seeded No. 1 in the qualification bracket, had a bye through the first round and defeated Australia’s No. 17 Joshua Court and Damien Schumann, 21-15, 21-12, in the second round.

The pair will join fellow U.S. teams Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.), John Hyden (Pensacola, Fla.) and Tri Bourne (Aiea, Hawaii) and Nick Lucena (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Ryan Doherty (Toms River, N.J.) in starting main draw play on Thursday.

No. 2 Rosenthal and Dalhausser will compete in Pool B, No. 12 Gibb and Patterson will compete in Pool E, No. 6 Hyden and Bourne will compete in Pool F and No. 10 Lucena and Doherty will compete in Pool G.

On the women’s side, the U.S. beach team of Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Summer Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.), seeded No. 18 in the main draw, defeated Switzerland’s No. 15 Nadine Zumkehr and Joana Heidrich, 22-20, 17-21, 15-13. The duo then fell to Brazil’s No. 2 Agatha Bednarczuk and Barbara Seixas, 21-11, 21-19.

Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.) and Heather Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.), seeded No. 27, fell to Netherland’s No. 6 Madelein Meppelink and Marleen Van Iersel, 15-21, 21-11, 15-4, and later fell to Germany’s No. 11 Laura Ludwig and Julia Sude, 21-19, 21-18.

Hochevar and Hughes competed in the qualification tournament as a No. 4 seed and had a bye through the first round and defeated Finland's No. 13 Erika Nystrom and Emilia Nystrom, 21-8, 21-8. 

On Thursday, the women will play in the first round of single elimination while the men’s main draw will begin.
