U.S. Men Set for Finals

By Jessica Hall | Aug. 16, 2014, 9:34 a.m. (ET)

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 16, 2014) - Team captain Zachary La Cavera propelled the U.S. Men’s Pan American Team to a 3-0 victory over Puerto Rico, 28-26, 25-22, 26-24, at the IX Men’s Pan Am Cup on Friday in Tijuana, Mexico to advance to the finals.

The U.S. Men (3-0) will play Cuba (4-0) on Saturday at 7 p.m. (PT) in the finals. The winner will get an automatic berth to the 2015 FIVB World League.

“We expected a very tough match,” U.S. head coach Charles Sullivan said. “It was 3-0 but it was not reflected in the score. We have a lot of work to do and have to prepare for our match against Cuba.”

Team USA controlled every aspect of the game, leading in kills (45-38), blocks (9-6) and aces (3-2).

La Cavera (Huntington Beach, Calif.) led the U.S. in points with a total of 25, including 20 kills, three blocks and two aces. Outside hitter Taylor Crabb (Honolulu, Hawaii) was the next top scorer behind La Cavera with 12 points, including 11 kills and one block.

Middle blocker Taylor Averill (San Jose, Calif.) contributed two kills, three blocks and one ace. Outside hitter AJ Nally (Rochester, N.Y.) added six kills, two digs and had three excellent receptions on 11 total attempts.

Libero Michael Brinkley (Huntington Beach, Calif.) led the U.S. in digs with four and had three excellent receptions on 11 total attempts.

Setter Robert Boldog (Palatine, Ill.) had 16 running sets on 76 total attempts and one fault for the match.

“We are all really excited,” La Cavera said. “It’s crazy because we’ve had so little time to practice as a team. To see how far we’ve come together to make it to the finals, it’s really nice.”
