U.S. Men Advance to Semifinals of Pan Am Cup
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 14, 2014) – The U.S. Men’s Pan American Team punched its ticket to the semifinals of the IX Men’s Pan American Cup in Baja California, Mexico after defeating host Mexico in a straight-set victory, 31-29, 25-23, 25-23.
The U.S. Men (2-0) will play in one Friday semifinal while Argentina (2-0) will play in the other. The teams will get their opponents from Thursday’s quarterfinals, which will see Puerto Rico (1-1) play Mexico (1-1) and Cuba (2-0) take on Venezuela (1-1).
Team USA controlled all aspects of the match leading in kills (50-43), blocks (7-4) and aces (4-3).
“Every time we compete against a very experienced team like Mexico, we have to fight and play hard by showing a good level,” U.S. head coach Charles Sullivan said. “Our players did a very good job of doing that tonight.”
Leading scorer for the U.S., outside hitter Taylor Crabb (Honolulu, Hawaii) had a total of 17 kills with six excellent receptions on 18 total attempts. Middle blocker Taylor Averill (San Jose, Calif.) was right behind Crabb in scoring with 10 kills, two blocks and two aces
Outside hitter AJ Nally had four kills, two blocks, one dig and had eight excellent receptions on 27 total attempts. Middle blocker Scott Kevorken added seven kills and one block for the U.S. offense.
Libero Michael Brinkley (Huntington Beach, Calif.) led Team USA in digs with eight and had 11 excellent receptions on 16 total attempts. U.S. team captain Zachary La Cavera tallied 11 kills, one block and one ace.
“I thought this match was a solid team effort,” La Cavera said. “All of Mexico’s fans were on us and it was a tough environment to play in. We came together really well and I think each player did their part and it really was successful for us.”
Setter Robert Boldog had 19 running sets on 82 attempts and had one fault for the match. Boldog added two offensive points with one ace and one block.
