Men's Pan American Team Cruises in Opener

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 13, 2014) – The U.S. Men’s Pan American Team handled Colombia in a straight-set victory, 25-18, 25-23, 25-15, on Tuesday night, in its opening match of the IX Men’s Pan American Cup in Baja California, Mexico.

Team USA controlled every aspect of the match, leading in kills (35-31), blocks (7-5) and aces (5-2).

“It was a good start for us,” U.S. head coach Charles Sullivan said. “We were really pressured by Colombia. The have a lot of good hitters and we had to play disciplined on defense. We have a lot of work now to get better.”

Leading scorer for the U.S., opposite Zachary La Cavera (Huntington Beach, Calif.) had a total of 15 points with 11 kills, two aces and two blocks. Taylor Crabb (Honolulu, Hawaii), outside hitter, was right behind La Cavera in points with nine, including eight kills and one ace.

Libero Michael Brinkley (Huntington Beach, Calif.) had four digs and had a total of eight excellent receptions on 16 attempts. Crabb contributed three digs and 12 excellent receptions on 20 attempts.

Setter Robert Boldog (Palatine, Ill.) tallied a total of 18 running sets on 62 attempts and had one error for the match. Opposite La Cavera had one running set on four attempts and one fault for the match.

Middle blocker Taylor Averill (San Jose, Calif.) contributed nine points in the match, while outside hitter AJ Nally (Rochester, N.Y.) contributed seven points to the win.

The two pool winners with the highest ranking at the end of prelims will advance directly to the semifinal round, while pool winners with the lowest ranking will join the second placed teams in the quarterfinals.
