Ross, Walsh Advance to 2nd Round in Fuzhou
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 25, 2014) – The U.S. beach volleyball team of Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross have advanced to the second round of single elimination at the FIVB Fuzhou Open.
Walsh Jennings (Saratoga, Calif.) and Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) are the lone U.S. team still playing in Fuzhou.
On Friday, Walsh Jennings and Ross, seeded No. 4 in the main draw, went 3-0 in pool play by defeating Argentina’s No. 20 Georgina Klug and Ana Gallay, 22-20, 21-18 in 39 minutes. They advanced directly to the second round where they will play Brazil’s No. 6 Agatha Bednarczuk and Barbara Seixas De Freitas on Saturday.
The other two U.S. women’s teams in the main draw both lost in the first round of single elimination on Friday.
No. 11 Jennifer Fopma (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.) finished pool play 2-1 after defeating Agatha and Seixas on Friday, 14-21, 26-24, 15-13 in 55 minutes. In the first round of single elimination the U.S. pair fell to Italy’s No. 8 Marta Menegatti and Viktoria Orsi Toth, 21-14, 21-13 in 32 minutes.
No. 13-seeded Lane Carico (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.) finished pool play at 1-2 after winning their final pool match on Friday over No. 29 Martina Bonnerová and Barbora Hermannová of Czech Republic (23-21, 21-17 in 36 minutes). In the first round, Carico and Hochevar fell to Thailand’s No. 24 Varapatsorn Radarong and Tanarattha Udomchavee, 20-22, 21-19, 15-9 in 51 minutes.
In the men’s bracket, No. 2 Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) won their first-round match over Spain’s No. 21 Francisco Alfredo Marco and Christian García on Friday, 21-15, 21-14 in 38 minutes. However they fell to Brazil’s No. 6 Alison Cerutti and Bruno Oscar Schmidt in the second round (15-21, 21-17, 15-12 in 55 minutes) and finished tied for ninth.
