Lower Seeds Succeed at NORCECA Playoff
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 17, 2014) – The U.S. women’s beach team of Tealle Hunkus and Kim DiCello and the men’s team of Avery Drost and Ty Tramblie won the second 2014 USA Volleyball NORCECA Qualification Tournament on Wednesday at the Annenberg Beach House in Santa Monica, Calif.
The victories mean that these U.S. teams will have the first pick of competing in the NORECA Beach Continental Tour events in Colima, Mexico (May 28-June 2), Toluca, Mexico (June 4-9) and Toronto, Canada (July 9-14).
Hunkus (Girard, Ohio) and DiCello (San Diego), who were seeded third, won the tournament without dropping a set. In the final, they defeated fourth seeds Kendra Van Zwieten (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Allison Daley (Grass Valley, Calif.), 21-17, 21-17.

In the third-place match, top-seeded Jennifer Fopma (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.) won by forfeit over second-seeded Christal Engle (Pallyup, Wash.) and Heather Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.).
On the men’s side, Drost (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Tramblie (Newport Beach, Calif.), who were seeded sixth, beat top-seeded Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Theo Brunner (Ridgefield, Conn.) in the final, 21-15, 12-21, 15-9.
In the men’s third-place match, second-seeded Tri Bourne (Aiea, Hawaii) and John Hyden (Pensacola, Fla.) defeated fourth-seeded Will Montgomery (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Stafford Slick (Andover, Minn.), 25-23, 21-17.
The next NORCECA playoff will be played June 25 at the Annenberg Beach House. It will be free and open to the public. It will qualify U.S. teams for the NORCECA Tour events in Dominican Republic, Veradero, Cuba, St. Lucia and Puerto Rico.
