Beach Update: Cincinnati Surprises

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sept. 3, 2013) – Updates on what’s happening in beach volleyball.

Emily Day and Summer Ross, seeded No. 14 at the AVP’s Cincinnati Open, defeated No. 2 seeded Whitney Pavlik and Kerri Walsh Jennings twice on their way to winning the Cincinnati Open on Sunday (Sept. 1). It was the first AVP tournament victory for both players. On the men’s side, Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson won their first AVP event as a team.

In the women’s final, Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.) defeated Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.) and Walsh Jennings (Saratoga, Calif.), 21-15, 21-11. Day and Ross also defeated Pavlik and Walsh Jennings in an earlier winners’ bracket match, 21-19, 21-15.

To reach the final, Day and Ross also defeated No. 3 Jennifer Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.) and Brooke Sweat (Fort Meyers, Fla.), 25-23, 21-16. In the semifinals, Day and Ross topped No. 7 Angie Akers (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Priscilla Lima (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), 18-21, 21-19, 15-12.

In the men’s bracket, No. 2 seeded Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.) defeated No. 5 Theo Brunner (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Nick Lucena (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) in the final, 21-14, 22-20.

Gibb and Patterson did not lose a match in the tournament and defeated No. 4 Tri Bourne (Aiea, Hawaii) and John Hyden (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) in the semifinals, 27-25, 21-19.

On their way to the final, Brunner and Lucena fell to Bourne and Hyden and had to come back through the consolation bracket. In the semifinals, Brunner and Lucena upset No. 1 Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.), 21-19, 21-14.

The AVP held the Cincinnati Open, the third stop on its 2013 tour at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.

The next stop for the AVP Tour is in Atlantic City on Sept. 6-8. The AVP web site is avp.com.

The FIVB Beijing Grand Slam, scheduled for Oct. 1-6 in China has been cancelled. The final FIVB Grand Slam event for the 2013 season will be the Sao Paulo event on Oct. 8-13.

U.S. men’s teams registered for the event are Dalhausser/Rosenthal, Gibb/Patterson, Todd Rogers/Ryan Doherty, Brad Keenan/John Mayer and Will Montgomery/Avery Drost.

U.S. women’s teams entered are Walsh Jennings/April Ross, Pavlik/Jennifer Kessy, Jennifer Fopma/Brooke Sweat, Lauren Fendrick/Brittany Hochevar, Day/Ross and Lane Carico/Heather Hughes.

There are four more FIVB Open tournaments scheduled for 2013 in Kampala, Uganda (Sept. 25-29), Xiamen, China (women only, Oct. 23-27), Phuket, Thailand (women only, Oct. 29-Nov. 3) and Durban, South Africa (Dec. 11-15).

The next NORCECA Beach Circuit event is scheduled for Sept. 11-16 in Mazatlan, Mexico.
