COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sept. 1, 2013) – The U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team will hold a Red-Blue intrasquad scrimmage on Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. PT at Orange Coast Community College in Costa Mesa, Calif., as a fundraiser for the Starlings Volleyball Clubs.
In addition to serving as a vehicle for donations and awareness for Starlings Volleyball Clubs, the scrimmage will serve as an opportunity to see the team play prior to competing in the Visit Omaha NORCECA Women’s Continental Championship set for Sept. 16-21. The event is a qualification tournament into the season-ending FIVB Grand Champions Cup set for Nov. 12-17.
Starlings, founded in 1996 by former U.S. Men’s National Volleyball Team member Byron Shewman, is a non-profit organization that offers girls from lower-income and ethnically diverse environments a chance to play club volleyball. Starlings has reached 30,000 girls in 40 cities across the United States, including one of the most recent club additions located in Anaheim, Calif., which is the Host City for the U.S. Women’s and Men’s National Volleyball Teams and where both programs train.
The U.S. Women have been active supporters of the Starlings Anaheim program since its inception this summer. During the program’s eight weeks of training, over 35 National Team players served as coaches each week, working with 80 junior high school girls from the Anaheim area.
Tickets for the scrimmage are $20 for adults, $10 for seniors, military and students (18-and-over) and $5 for juniors. To purchase tickets, visit starlings-usa.eventbrite.com. All match proceeds go directly to Starlings Volleyball Clubs. By attending the scrimmage, you will be giving more girls the chance to learn and play the sport of volleyball, and possibly earn a collegiate scholarship in the future.
If you are unable to attend the Red-Blue scrimmage, donations are being accepted via check or PayPal. Checks can be sent to Starlings Volleyball Clubs USA, PO Box 4784, Oceanside, CA 92052. Donations can be made via PayPal by going to www.starlings.org. Starlings is an IRS-registered 501(c)3 charitable organization. U.S.-based donations are tax-deductible.
The Red-Blue scrimmage will also accept used volleyballs onsite as part of the Leave a Ball Behind program. All donated balls will go toward Starlings programs.
