Four U.S. Beach Teams Advance in Phuket

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Oct. 31, 2013) – All four U.S. women’s beach teams competing at the FIVB Phuket Open in Phuket, Thailand advanced into the elimination rounds as pool play wrapped up on Thursday.

Continuing its winning streak from the day before was the team of April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Jennifer Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.), defeating No. 14 Gioria Daniela and Laura Giombini of Italy, 21-9, 21-16 in 33 minutes. Ross and Fopma, seeded No. 3, finished in first place in Pool C with a record of 3-0 and advance into the second round of elimination matches.

In Pool F, the sixth-seeded Brooke Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.) and Jennifer Kessy (Costa Mesa, Calif.) lost their final pool play match to No. 11 Chen Xue and Xinyi Xia of China, 13-21, 22-20, 15-11 in 53 minutes. Sweat and Kessy finished with a 2-1 record and in second place in their pool, advancing to the first elimination round where they will face No. 24 Yuan Yue and Yuanyuan Ma of China (2-1). Should Sweat and Kessy win their first elimination match, they will face Ross and Fopma in round two.

The No. 9 team of Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Summer Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.) also finished atop its pool. It earned a 2-1 record in Pool H after defeating No. 8 Rumpaipruet Numwong and Khanittha Hongpak of Thailand, 21-16, 21-16 in 36 minutes. Day and Ross advance directly into the second round of elimination matches.

Also in Pool H, Lane Carico (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Heather Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.) won their final match against Yue and Ma, 21-17, 21-12 in 32 minutes. Carico and Hughes finished pool play with a 2-1 record and in second place in their pool. They advance into the first elimination round where they will face No. 15 Alexandra Shiryaeva and Ekaterina Syrtseva of Russia (1-2). If Carico and Hughes win their first match, they will move on to face Russia’s No. 10 Evgenia Ukolova and Maria Prokopeva (3-0).

Matches in both the first and second elimination rounds take place on Friday (Nov. 1).
