COLORADO SPRING, Colo. (Oct. 26, 2013) – Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross have advanced to the semifinals of the FIVB beach volleyball Xiamen Grand Slam in China.

Walsh Jennings (Saratoga, Calif.) and Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.), seeded No. 5, will play Germany’s No. 4 Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst in Sunday’s first semifinal. The winner will play for gold on Sunday against the winner of the second semifinal between Brazil’s No. 2 Talita Da Rocha Antunes and Taiana Lima and Germany’s No. 6 Katrin Holtwick and Ilka Semmler. The bronze me.dal match will also be played on Sunday
The U.S. team of Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Summer Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.) lost in the third round and finished tied for fifth.
On Saturday, Walsh Jennings and Ross defeated China’s No. 8 Yuan Yue and Yuanyuan Ma in the second round in an injury forfeit. In the third round, Walsh Jennings and Ross beat Kazakhstan’s No. 19 Tatyana Mashkova and Irina Tsimbalova (21-13, 21-18 in 31 minutes).
In the second round, Day and Ross beat Czech Republic’s No. 10 Kristyna Kolocova and Marketa Slukova (21-10, 21-18 in 31 minutes). But the U.S. duo fell in the third round to Talita and Lima (21-15, 21-19 in 34 minutes).
In the second set of the quarterfinals, Lima/Talita trailed by a narrow margin most of the way before levelling it at 17-all. When it was tied at 19-all, Lima/Talita ran off two points in a row with a smart dink of Lima wrapping up the match in 34 minutes.
“I think they are a good team, the first set we played better. In the second set, they served better than us and they had some blocks which was good for them,” Talita said. “But we stayed calm all the time and we never give up and we were trying to do something different and positive.”
