COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Oct. 25, 2013) – The U.S. women’s teams of Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross and also Emily Day and Summer Ross have advanced to the second round of the FIVB beach volleyball Xiamen Grand Slam in China.

Meanwhile, the women’s team of Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.), seeded No. 9, did not advance from pool play. The men’s team of Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.), seeded No. 6, upset Brazil’s No. 2 Pedro Solberg Salgado and Bruno Oscar Schmidt in the second round, but lost in the third round and finished tied for fifth.
Gibb and Patterson defeated their U.S. compatriots Theo Brunner (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.), seeded No. 26, in the first round on Friday (21-17, 16-21, 15-12 in 43 minutes). Brunner and Rogers finished tied for 17th.
In women’s action on Friday, all three U.S. teams lost their final pool play matches. In the first round, Walsh Jennings (Saratoga, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.), seeded No. 5, defeated Argentina’s No. 16 Ana Gallay and Georgina Klug (21-11, 16-21, 17-15 in 46 minutes). Day and Summer Ross, seeded No. 13, beat Netherlands’ No. 18 Rimke Braakman and Jantine van der Vlist, 21-11, 21-18 in 29 minutes).

In Saturday’s second round, Walsh Jennings and April Ross will play China’s No. 8 Yuan Yue and Yuanyuan Ma. Day and Summer Ross will face Czech Republic’s No. 10 Kristyna Kolocova and Marketa Slukova.
In the men’s bracket on Friday, Gibb and Patterson defeated Pedro and Bruno in the second round (13-21, 21-16, 16-14 in 51 minutes). But after two three-set battles, the U.S. pair ran out of steam in the third round and fell to Brazil’s No. 10 Alison Cerutti and Vitor Gonçalves Felipe (11-21, 23-21, 15-11 in 51 minutes).
