COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Oct. 11, 2013) – The U.S. women’s beach volleyball team of Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross along with the men’s team of Phil Dalhausser and Casey Jennings have advanced to the semifinals of the FIVB Sao Paulo Grand Slam.

The semifinals and bronze medal matches will be played on Saturday with the gold medal matches on Sunday.
Walsh Jennings, who is married to Casey Jennings, and Ross, seeded No. 10 in the main draw, advanced on Friday by defeating Brazil’s No. 3 Maria Clara Salgado Rufino and Carolina Solberg Salgado, 17-21, 21-11, 15-8 in 48 minutes in the second round. In the third round, Walsh and Ross defeated their No. 15 U.S. compatriots Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.), 22-20, 21-19 in 40 minutes.
Fendrick and Hochevar finished the tournament tied for fifth. In the second round, Fendrick and Hochevar defeated the No. 12 U.S. team of also Jennifer Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.) and Brooke Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.), 21-18, 21-17 in 35 minutes. Fopma and Sweat finished tied for ninth.
The women’s team of Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Summer Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.) finished tied for 17th after losing in the first round to Brazil’s No. 7 Maria Antonelli and Agatha Bednarczuk (21-18, 21-19 in 39 minutes).
U.S. teams also eliminated each other in the men’s bracket as Dalhausser and Jennings, seeded No. 18, defeated No. 4 Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.) in the third round, 21-10, 21-17 in 32 minutes. Gibb and Patterson finished tied for fifth.
The No. 20 U.S. team of Nick Lucena (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Ryan Doherty (Toms River, N.J.) also finished tied for fifth after falling in the third round to Spain’s No. 5 Pablo Herrera and Adrián Gavira (21-17, 17-21, 15-12 in 47 minutes).
