Detroit, Columbus Selected to Host Events in 2015

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Oct. 11, 2013) – USA Volleyball announced Friday at its Regional Volleyball Association meetings being held in Denver that Detroit will serve as host city for the 2015 USA Volleyball Open National Championships and Columbus, Ohio, will serve as the host city for the 2015 USA Volleyball Boys’ Junior National Championships (BJNC).

The 2015 Open, which will be the 86th edition of the annual event, will be held May 22-27 at the COBO Center in Detroit. The Open, created in 1928 with only two years missed due to World War II, brings in an estimated 550-plus teams and 6,000-plus players into the host city. The Open has been a mainstay celebrating adult volleyball nationally. The event is one of the largest national championships in any sport in the United States, and the Open has featured the sport of volleyball from coast-to-coast.

“Detroit is in the heart of a very strong adult volleyball population and a city on the rebound,” USA Volleyball Senior Director Tom Pingel said. “USA Volleyball will be proud to be a part of this resurgence and look forward to the 2015 USA Volleyball Open National Championships being one of the best and biggest we’ve had.”

Detroit has previously hosted the Open in 1938 and 1967.

The 2014 Open will be held May 23-28 in Phoenix.

The 2015 BJNC will be held June 28 to July 5 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, Ohio. The BJNC attracts 400-plus teams and 4,500-plus athletes. The event will have Open Division titles in each age group from 14 to 18, while offering club titles for each age from 12 to 18. Not only is this a tournament to portray talent from all over the country, it is also a chance for college recruiters to find potential players for their programs.

“Columbus was a great partner in hosting the GJNC in 2012 and will undoubtedly be ready to top that effort in hosting the BJNC in 2015,” Pingel said. “Columbus is within driving distance of a very large number of hotbeds for boys’ volleyball in the United States.”

The 2014 BJNC will be held June 28 to July 5 in Houston.

USA Volleyball expects to announce the site for the 2015 USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships (GJNC) later this year. The 2014 GJNC will be held June 24 to July 3 (dates subject to change) in Minneapolis.
