COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Oct. 10, 2013) – Seven U.S. beach volleyball teams advanced from pool play on Thursday at the FIVB Sao Paulo Grand Slam.

For the women, Kerri Walsh Jennings (Saratoga, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) finished pool play 3-0 to advance straight to Friday’s second round as did Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.).
For the men, Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.) went 3-0 in pool play and advanced to the second round.
The men’s teams of Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Calif.) and Casey Jennings (Van Nuys, Calif.) and also Nick Lucena (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Ryan Doherty (Toms River, N.J.) advanced from pool play with records of 2-1.
The women’s teams of Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Summer Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.) and also Jennifer Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.) and Brooke Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.) finished pool play with records of 1-2 and advanced to the first round.
On Thursday, Walsh Jennings and Ross, seeded No. 10, competed pool play with a 21-16, 20-22, 15-13 victory in 58 minutes over Brazil’s No. 7 Maria Antonelli and Agatha Bednarczuk. No. 15 Fendrick and Hochevar beat Brazil’s No. 2 Maria Clara Salgado and Carolina Salgado, 16-21, 21-18, 15-12 in 52 minutes.
No. 12 Fopma and Sweat took their lone pool play victory over Thailand’s No. 28 Varapatsorn Radarong and Tanarattha Udomchavee, 21-14, 21-10 in 31 minutes.
In men’s play on Thursday, No. 4 Gibb and Patterson defeated Austria’s No. 10 Alexander Huber and Robin Seidl, 23-25, 21-17, 16-14 in 1 hour, 1 minute.
No. 18 Dalhausser and Jennings fell to Brazil’s No 2 Pedro Solberg Salgado and Bruno Oscar Schmidt (21-12, 19-21, 15-12 in 58 minutes) and defeated France’s Andy Cès and Edouard Rowlandson (21-18, 21-11 in 39 minutes).
No. 20 Lucena and Doherty defeated Huber and Seidl (25-23, 16-21, 15-7 in 47 minutes) and Canada’s No. 29 Grant O'Gorman and Sam Pedlow (21-19, 21-16 in 35 minutes).
